Several thousand years ago there were two great spirit entities who had no form, so they infused a human with large amounts of their reiatsu, turning him into the first quincy. Using his new powers the quincy gave the two human forms.

Hundreds of years later the entities had been around each other so long that they had begun to notice changes in their reiatsu. One being's reiatsu had a much different feel than the other's. To fix this problem the sought out the new quincy leader and informed him of their dilemma. The quincy leader analyzed their reiatsu's, coming to the conclusion that they looked the same, but were two different things- "like a cat and a dog". Hundreds of years more would pass before the entities' reiatsu began to take form. One reiatsu took the form of a sword, while the others' reiatsu turned him into a great beast. The first shinigami and hollow were created. The greatness of the reiatsu of the two began to affect the human world, so they created a dimension known as the soul society, there everything was made entirely of loose reishi, and there humans would go after the died instead of roaming around as ghosts.

Day and night the shinigami and hollow worked to return the hollow to normal until one day, seven hundred years later, and after three transformations, they had made success. By infusing the hollow with his own reiatsu the hollow could take on a human like form. The very first shinigamification had been accomplished. Ever since he had first became a hollow, he had a hunger for souls, one that the shinigami was able to satisfy by feeding him reishi. Now that he had attained a form too powerful for this method of feeding he required souls.

That night the arrancar journeyed to the world of the living and feasted on hundreds upon hundreds of living human souls. The shinigami quickly found this out and went to the world of the living to intervene. Once there he fought the arrancar, severely beating him, but because they were such good friends he spared him. The arrancar swore revenge, then left the world, creating a dimension called Hueco Mundo along with an army of monsters he called hollows, for they had no hearts. The shinigami created the seireitei, and became known as the Soul King. The arrancar became the Black King.

The Black King swore his revenge and soon he would have it. An anonymous message sent to the seireitei would say "this winter there will be war".
