In the past in ages long forgotten the Faery and Mortal realms were one. This was a time for fear and strife for Mortals of all races, for the Faery, even those of the Seelie court were mischievous and untrustworthy at best, and at worst...well we won't even go there. Men and women were seen as playthings, game-pieces and pawns used in Faery court intrigues and plots.
Now, war between the Seelie and Unseelie realms wasn't a surprising thing, and even during times of “peace” disorganized scuffles were an expected thing. But there came a time of great war such as was never seen before. Mortal Kings seeing an opportunity seized it, and made treaties and pacts with the more noble and trustworthy Seelie court. They sent their best warriors and wizards to fight. It was a time of blood and glory made immortal in minstrel-song and story. The Seelie Court won that fight, and as part of their agreement with their Mortal helpers they and the Unseelie court moved to another world separated from our own by a veil of magic. A time of peace has existed in both realms for over a thousand years.
In our current time however the Unseelie court is rising in power again. They plot in secret to bring the balance of power back over to their side and the first battles of their war have already been fought. The Seelie Court doesn't have enough power to keep the veil up and fight their war, and rifts are already appearing. The Fay are slipping through these rifts, meeting with their Court-less brethren once more and causing chaos in the realm.
