overall personality~ In Ed’s mind, he comes to pair the Stone with feats of great glory and power, making him more and more determined to possess it. However, there is a bit of a conflict in this association; as Ed’s journey progresses, he is also witness to many terrible and disturbing acts committed by others who also want to possess the Stone, which ends up pairing it with grief and pain. These two associations often war in Ed’s psyche, and he is forced to try to decide which interpretation is the correct one, or if indeed either is. There is also a slightly more positive example of unintentional classical conditioning in Ed’s life—the strong association he forms between safety and the home of his childhood guardians, the Rockbell family. After his mother’s death, Ed and his brother Alphonse were taken in by the Rockbells, and even during his arduous and dangerous quest for the Stone, Ed always returns to them in times of great emotional strife or physical hardship. He connects love, acceptance, and a strong sense of family to his time in their home, which keeps him coming back to them many times throughout the series to ground himself mentally and emotionally. The Rockbells, who specialize in metal prosthetics, were also the ones to give Ed his artificial arm and leg. Thus, it can also be argued that Ed associates the Rockbells with giving him renewed hope, freedom, and the ability to move and fight with similar or greater ability than he would be able to with a normal body. They are consequently one of the most positive influences in his life and often the only ones who can make him see sense.

history~ Born in the small, countryside town of Resembool in 1898, Edward Elric, though he didn't know it yet would grow up to be a living legend. Being that his father left him, his mother, and his baby brother Al, he only knew the love of a mother, and a bubbling dislike, soon to be hate of his father, would soon grow, this was about two years after Ed was born, and one after Al was born. When the brothers were of the ages 5 and 4 they started getting into their father's alchemy texts, and what was more amazing, they actually understood it. They proved their prowess on their friend Winry's birthday, making her a simple doll. Though it scared Winry, their mother was extremely proud of them, and thus the thirst for alchemical knowledge began.
As they got older, they both grew more skilled, though Ed always outshined his brother Al, and they always heard the words "You two are just like your father" though Al didn't take it to heart, Ed did, and ran off. Edward hated his father for leaving them behind. He decided to go to Winry's house to cool off, and they were struck with tragic news. Winry's parents died. It came as a shock to them, and by the time they ran back to their mother, they were crying. Then they didn't understand that death was it, you couldn't bring a person back, no matter how much you wanted it, but they would soon enough.
When they were 10 and 9, they came back from collecting vegetables, expecting to show their mother their next alchemic conquest, boy were they wrong. They found their mother, but she was on the floor, with a look of death on her face. As she lay on her death bed, she asked for a ring of flowers, because "their father used to make them." It was then and there they realized why their mother loved the alchemy they did so much, it reminded her of Hohenheim. She died, and they were heart broken. They were planning to bring her back, but they needed more training. That came on a very rainy day in the form of a woman named Izumi Curtis. After she saved the town from becoming flooded, and she got a chance to rest from her ongoing illness, they asked her to take them as students. At first she said nom, but after seeing the look on their faces, she changed her mind. They went through hell, facing a month on Yock Island trying to comprehend the meaning of "All is one. One is All" and 6 months of training. They came back ready to perform the human transmutation. They did so, with disastrous results. Ed lost his left leg in the initial transmutation, Al lost his entire body. Ed, still bleeding from his first wound sacrificed his right arm to bind Al's soul to the suit of armor. Al carried Ed to the Rockbells house. There Ed requested Automail after then Lieutenant Colonel, Roy Mustang talked about being a State Alchemist. Ed decided he would become one, and he needed an arm and leg that worked. After enduring the pain of the automail surgery, he left Resembool with Al, but not before burning their house down and not looking back. Ed became a State Alchemist when he was twelve, passing the test with flying colors, earning the name Fullmetal Alchemist. For four years he and Al have faced many trials and tribulations, and they are still nowhere closer to finding the stone.

roleplay sample~ "Al do you think we can find it? another way of getting our bodies back to normal i mean." Edward looked over to his brother who was traped inside of a suit of metal, always a constant reminder of his mess ups in the past. Al had always had the same expression on his face a 'blank stare' probably because he was a suit of armor. As the moon rose high into the sky the cool breeze had picked up just a little bit.
